Epithalon
Synthetic tetrapeptide (pineal) · Also known as Epitalon, Epithalone, AEDG peptide
What is Epithalon?
A synthetic version of a naturally occurring pineal gland peptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) studied for its ability to activate telomerase and extend telomere length. Developed by Russian gerontologist Vladimir Khavinson over several decades of research.
Epithalon is a tetrapeptide based on the amino acid composition of epithalamin, a bovine pineal gland extract. In 2017 it was confirmed to be naturally present in the human pineal gland. Human cohort studies in elderly patients reported reduced mortality over a 6-year follow-up period, though these results come primarily from a small number of Russian studies and have not been independently replicated. Recent Western studies have confirmed its telomerase-activating properties in human cell lines.
Benefits & evidence
How it works
Epithalon activates telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining and extending telomeres. the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division. By upregulating the catalytic subunit of telomerase (hTERT), Epithalon enables cells to maintain telomere length, effectively extending their replicative lifespan.
Beyond telomerase activation, Epithalon interacts with specific DNA sequences through hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds. It also modulates melatonin production from the pineal gland, helps normalize circadian rhythms, and has demonstrated antioxidant properties by upregulating enzymes like superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase.
Dosing information
Typical dosing protocol
5-10 mg/day
